Uncommon Threads is a group of fiber artists from a three state
region who meet monthly in Springfield, Missouri. Organized in
October, 2003 under the umbrella of the Ozark Piecemakers Quilt
Guild, they are drawn together by a love of fiber, color, texture and
expression of art in a tactile medium. Unlike traditional quilt
makers, these artists explore innovative techniques and mediums in
quilt making and fiber art construction. Several of the members
exhibit their art in national venues and publications.
An art quilt is a highly collectable piece of art work. It is not
designed for use on a bed like a traditional quilt, but is meant to
be hung on the wall like a painting. Like a painting or other work of
art, the design may be abstract, representational or figurative.
Artists using fiber as their medium may dye, paint, cut, tear or fuse
the fabric or other fiber as part of their work. They may embellish
it with beads, photo transfers or found objects. Hand or machine
stitching or embroidery gives the work a dimensional interest that
mere paint cannot.
Uncommon Threads meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 11:30
am at RuBert Studio, 1841 Bergman, Springfield, Missouri. Contact
